Stay in Your Lane!

Have you ever been travelling down a road and became nervous because the big truck passing you is getting closer to you than you’d like? Or you see someone weaving in their lane just ahead of you? What do you say to them? “Stay in your lane!” You want them to be safe but more importantly, YOU want to be safe! I had the Lord apply that to my life in another area recently and I want to share that with you. I think it applies to more than just me.

When I was a mom of young children I remember many times, when people around me needing help thought I was just the thing they needed. They needed help and I am a helper. Sounds logical, right? I just remember coming to a point, particularly one time, where the school I was teaching in part time, the church we attended, and of course, my family, all need 100% of me. Or so they thought. I was stretched too thin and felt like I was going to break! I have reached that recently again in an area and was ready to hide in a cave and not see anyone, help anyone, or even talk to anyone. It wasn’t just a feeling you get that goes away after a good movie and some serious chocolate. It was growing bigger and bigger, and I could see no way around it.

God has helped me through it with these simple words: “Stay in your lane!” At first, I didn’t understand, but He had me go back to what is my calling? What has He called me to do? People will tell you all day long what they think you should do but they are not the ones who’s opinion matters. When I came to the realization of what my main calling is, the other things that I do fell into the right perspective. Yes, I am called to do more than one thing and you probably are, too. But most likely, there is one thing that is your main calling. Stay in your lane.

Don’t let others tell you that you are so needed, that you are so anointed to do what they want you to do. Whether it is in that main area, one of the secondary areas, or even a new area. Seek God first. Don’t be driven by how things look on the outside of a thing. Only be led by what God is showing you and telling you on the inside. If you are not sure of that, wait. Stay in your lane. The lane will curve at times, sometimes unexpectedly. But if you stay in your lane, you'll still be right in the middle of God's will. There may be occasional times in your life where God calls you to change lanes, but those will be few and far between. If you're not sure, wait. God will show you.

If you depend on others to tell you what you should be doing or if you follow after what looks easy, interesting, or lucrative, I can almost guarantee there are some major bumps in the road coming. Stay in your lane. Stay where God is calling and equipping you. Don’t get outside of your calling. God will fully supply all you need as you walk out that calling.

And now I don’t get irritated every time that situation comes up in my mind. Now I can walk in love with the people involved. Now I can set some parameters and stick to them. All because I choose to stay in my lane!
