Keep Walking

Winston Churchill said, “If you’re going through hell, keep going.” This is good advice! Don’t stay there, keep walking. Keep moving towards the Light! Yes, bad things happen to good people. But don’t stay there. Look up, look out, and walk out of that prison.
We have a human tendency to dwell on the things in our life that are not going the way that we think they should. When we do, we can make things worse. The Bible says that what a man thinks on, that he will become. In my teacher training they called it the Self-Fulfilling Prophecy. Keep believing something about yourself and you will end up speaking it and acting on it. It then becomes more and more entrenched in your life.
So how do you break free? It starts with a thought. If you think you will never get a break, never have a good life, you will eventually make choices that take you down that path. But let’s back up even further…how do you change your thoughts? Most of your thoughts are there because of what you are seeing and hearing. Who and what are you listening to on a regular basis? Is it building you up or tearing you down? It might not even be “bad” stuff. If you are constantly feeding your body junk food, your body will eventually develop deficits. If you are feeding yourself junk food emotionally, your soul will eventually develop deficits.
Going back to my teacher life, if a student is struggling and only hears that he/she is stupid, that they can’t do it, or they get laughed at by their peers, they will most likely succumb to that thought that they really can’t do it. But if someone steps in when he/she is struggling and shows them how they can do it, how they are smart, they will tend to believe that. Some take more effort than others, but the principle is that we will become what we continually feed on.
I choose to feed on God’s Word because it has the most nutrition for my soul. That doesn’t mean that it is the only thing I watch or listen to. But I know that when I keep it the main thing, my life is better. I used to dwell on what other people thought or might think about me. I would dissect what they said, and it usually ended up having me believe that others thought I was dumb, unattractive, and not worthy. When I began to give more weight to what God said about me, my life began to change. It was little changes at first, but now when I come across someone who says I am dumb, unattractive, and not worthy, I think “They are having a bad day!” instead of “They must be right.” So keep walking towards what God says about you. Think it, believe it, speak it. You will see good things as a result!
